NY Newsday Review

"Bagels abound these days - from grocery store shelves to the nearest doughnut
shops - yet it remains difficult to find a truly good, even decent, bagel.  So kudos to
Brookly Bagel and Coffee Co., 35-05 Broadway, Astoria, 718-204-0141.

You can tell these bagels are made the old-fashioned way - boiled in water and
then baked - by the crust's high sheen and the snap as you bite into it;  also, the
inside is dense and chewy, marked with a pleasant, slightly sour flavor.

The bakery - delicatessen, which has a contemporary look with brick walls,
a stone tile floor and an all-glass storefront, reflects Astoria's increasingly
yuppified air.  On any morning you can see the neighborhood's many different
faces - old men speaking in Greek over cups of coffee, young and middle-aged
professionals getting their java to go as they head to the subway, techno
kids surfing on their laptops.

More than a dozen different types of bagels are offered - wheat, rye,
sesame seed and egg - as well as more unusual flavors - sun-dried tomatoes
and blueberry.  They come in two sizes - "regular" bagels (which are humongous),
and "mini's" (my preference).  More that 14 different spreads, including regular,
low-fat and flavored cream cheeses, and tofu spreads for the vegans and the
lactose-intolerant, are available.  Soups, sandwiches and salads also are served."
